  • John Marcus Parrott (1912-2005), family member and patron of the Belleville Public Library.

This family has been around at least since the American Revolution; yet has remained reasonably small, even if this tree is very incomplete and has many gaps that need to be filled in. The patriarch is James, estimated to have been born ca 1730. He appears in New York. One, perhaps both, of his known sons became Unionists and moved to Canada. One of these sons has known descendants, and they are scattered from coast to coast on both sides of the USA-Canada border.

One prominent family member, William Clinton Parrott (1930-1997), was the owner of the Parrott Chemical Company of Stamford, Connecticut. The company made 'Lucky Strike' brand insecticides. Pictured at right, another family member, Max Horton Parrott, MD (1915-1987) was president of the American Medical Association during the 1975-1976 term. At fartherst right is a book by Kathleen R. Parrott (1950- ), PhD, CKE, retired Professor of Housing, Department of Apparel, Housing, and Resource Management at Virginia Tech.

Notes: from Sid Telford , Fri, 29 Sep 2000

"I came across Ruth TREADWELL quite by accident while researching my Ontario PARROTT family line of which I had a great deal of info. So, when I came across the following I knew it was my PARROTT & the surname of the spouse inspired me to look into the TREADWELL line..." DAR Patriot Index, Wash. D.C., dtd 1966, p. 517."
states: " (PARROTT, PARROT, PARRETT) John, b. 9/13/1745 d. 1/13/1830 m. Ruth TREADWELL, PVT. CT." Ruth TREADWELL was b. in Ipswich, MA. in Aug. 1750. She was baptised in Ipswich on Oct. 6, 1751. She died in Odessa, Ontario on Dec. 4, 1820. A Memorial Stone in the 4th Line Cemetery, Ernestown, Addington County, Ontario states: "John PARROTT died Jan. 13, 1830, also his wife, Ruth TREADWELL died Dec. 4, 1820." John PARROTT m. Ruth TREADWELL on July 13, 1769 in Ipswich, MA. On Aug. 7, 1769 a deed for land in their names was registered in Beverly, MA. John & Ruth had 8 children which I have accounted for: Mary "PARROTT; Sarah PARROTT; Patty PARROTT; Martha PARROTT; John PARROTT (my line); Elizabeth PARROTT; Jonathan PARROTT and James Ogle PARROTT.

John PARROTT had one brother James, both being born in what was then " Boston Province." Whereas John was a Patriot, James, later Col. James PARROTT, was a Loyalist who served with the Loyal Rangers. Following the war, James applied for and was granted considerable Crown lands in Upper Canada (now Ontario). According to documents among the "PARROTT Papers", Douglas Library, Queens University, Toronto, James persuaded brother John along with Ruth TREADWELL and their children to relocate to Ontario. This they did in about 1803. I have much more on the hardships John/Ruth & the children endured but it isn't appropriate for this Roll Call."

    JOHN MARCUS (Jack) PARROTT and
    BERNICE WINNIFRED PARROTT

    Inducted 2006

John Marcus (Jack) Parrott was born May 1, 1912 to Frederick Stanley Parrott and Lillian Maud Parke. They lived on the eastern outskirts of Belleville and operated a dairy farm on Lot 12, Concession 1, Thurlow Township. Jack has six known loyalist ancestors, Daniel Fraser, John Conklin, John Lake, James Lake, Andrew Miller and Peter Van Camp. The 240-acre family property had been purchased from the Carscallen family, a recognizable
loyalist name, by Jack's grandfather, Jonathan Marcus Parrott. He valued his landholdings as an investment and needed the help of his sons to maintain and run them to generate family income. The properties were mainly in Fredericksburg, Lennox & Addington Counties along with the property in Thurlow Township. By 1912, when Jack was born, the property had been turning a reasonable
profit as Fred built a dairy herd of purebred Holsteins. Jack was an only child; he attended the nearby one room public school, S.S. # 20, then advanced to Queen Alexandra in Belleville, and completed high school at Belleville Collegiate Institute. When his schooling was completed he joined his parents to operate their dairy farm. Good fortune came to Fred when he received an offer to sell his herd of purebred Holsteins to an American broker to be delivered to Cardiff, Wales. Arrangements were made and Jack accompanied his father on board ship. After their arrival Jack departed and traveled to France and then toured London before setting out for their return home. Their arrival home was highlighted by the declaration of war in Europe.

It was during the war years that Jack had his introduction to his future bride, Bernice Winnifred Robinson. Bernice, the only daughter and oldest in a family of three brothers was born in 1913 to parents, Frederick Alton Robinson and Claudia Demille. Bernice had five Loyalist ancestors; Zenas Ross, Jobst Huffnail, David Harris, Isaac Demille & David Palmer. Her father was a farm machinery mechanic and contract harvester living in Corbyville, Thurlow Township. Their family was very musical and it wasn't
unusual for them to be accompanying each other on the piano, with Bernice and her mother playing side by side, Fred played the violin and her brother Merle was very talented as he could play almost any instrument. A very clever student, Bernice completed her public school education at age eleven and for the next three years she studied music privately in Belleville before entering High School, which she completed in two years. Piano music was where her concentration was focused, passing her Canadian College of Music final exam, the youngest student to become an associate of the College. As a classical pianist, Bernice continued to develop her career taking teacher training in Toronto, and as a qualified
vocal music teacher she taught for nine years until 1958 in the elementary schools in Thurlow and Tyendinaga Townships as well as in Belleville schools.

Jack and Bernice were married on December 14, 1946. Bernice put her teaching career on hold for a while as she was now a partner in the operation of the Parrott farm. For a few years the farming operation consisted of growing crops and tending a large herd of Holstein cattle, but that would change as Jack exchanged the demands of farming for more entrepreneurial challenges. The property value of the farm land was recognized and it wasn't long before it was part of a building boom in the community and
subdivisions began to be built on the farm property, now part of the east end of Belleville. The funds from the development set them up financially for life. It was in the early 1960s when Jack & Bernice moved from their farm property to the western outskirts of Belleville beside the Bay of Quinte Golf Course.

They both took active rolls in their community for many years. Jack served as school trustee, was a member of the Rotary Club for 44 years where he was honoured, receiving the third level of the Paul Harris Fellow award, and Bernice was a recipient of the same award. Jack served on the board of Bridge Street United Church as Trustee and on the board of Governors at Albert College for 34 years as well as other interests where he found pleasure being active and serving in the community. Bernice was actively involved too, she joined the Woman's Institute in 1947, an interest encouraged through her mother as she too belonged for many years. As a longtime member of Quinte Women's Institute she held many
executive positions and participated as a club leader in the 4-H Club programs for Thurlow. Other interests included active participation in the Woman's Hospital Auxilliary of BGH, now Quinte Health Care, and the Albert College Woman's Guild. Art was of interest for both of them, it was when they decided to preserve and collect the many paintings of local artist Manley MacDonald from Point Anne. Because of their fore-sight and generosity the public is now able to enjoy these works in the Parrott Gallery of the Belleville Public Library.
Developers Jack and Bernice Parrott are true philanthropists and have helped countless organizations
succeed locally by donating millions of dollars toward making the Quinte community a better place to live through the John M. Parrott Foundation, created in 1977. In 2006 Bernice was presented with an Outstanding Philanthropist Award by Ontario Lt. Gov. James Bartleman. Jack died on August 11, 2005, and Bernice on October 8, 2009. Both were buried in Belleville Cemetery. They are inducted to our Hall of Honour for their philanthropic works.

    ======================
Ex-AMA president Max Parrott, MD, also served

Former American Medical Association (AMA) President Max Parott, MD, who died in 1987, was among the medical officers of the Third Auxiliary Surgical Group who landed with the troops on D day. Parrott, who was AMA president in 1975 and 1976, performed the first life-saving procedure on Utah Beach- an intubation that saved the life of a soldier dying of asphyxiation.

In Front Line Soldiers, Maj Clifford Groves writes, "Shortly before D-day. Captain Parrott came down with malaria, a hangover from Sicily. He was utterly miserable but insisted on staying with the team."

Shortly after landing on D day, Parrott discovered a lieutenant with a deep neck wound. The bullet had fractured the voice box and the patient was slowly dying of asphyxiation. Parrott needed what he didn't have- an endotracheal tube. They were all stored in stalled medical trucks. The only exit inland from Utah Beach had been closed by US commanders to medical trucks, until tanks and antitank weapons could pass through. Graves describes Parrott's actions this way:

"At that very moment, a truck arrived at the intersection and turned away ... a medical truck. Parrott dashed down the road, guided the truck into a field, and began a frantic search for the tube. It was a race against time and each storage chest had to be opened and ransacked. Finally there was a cry: 'Here it is!'

'Parrott seized the precious gadget. 'Steady, son,' he later said as he manipulated the tube down the patient's throat. Down went the tube, up came the secretions. Within a minute, the patient's breathing became easier. Later that evening, he was operated on and evacuated to the beach. This intubation was the first operation at the Utah Beach clearing station. Parrott considers it the high spot in his career."

    Robert married someone.

    150. Dr. Fraser Cartwright Parrott (John Ross6, Richard John Cartwright5, John4, James Ogle3, John2, James1) was born on 3 Jan 1922 and died on 22 Dec 2010 in Cambridge, Ontario, Canada, at age 88.

    Notes: Dr. Fraser Cartwright Parrott
    Jan. 3, 1922 - Dec. 22, 2010

It is with great sadness that we announce the quiet and dignified passing of our Husband, Father, Papa and Friend on December 22, 2010 in the Cambridge Memorial Hospital, after a long struggle with ALS.

Fraser grew up in Midland, Ontario and is survived by his wife Ruth Parrott (Gordon), his sons Jim (Sherry) and Mark, daughter Janice and brother-in-law, Dr. Jim Gordon. Fraser was the proud Papa of 5 grandchildren and 2 great- grandchildren; Fraser and Jennifer Parrott, Matthew, Michael and Nicholas Sorochuck, and Jennie's 2 girls, Keira and Grace. Dad was predeceased by his parents, John Ross Parrott and Enid Pansy Parrott (Fraser), his sister-in-law Shirley Harrison (Gordon), and brothers-in- law, Ralph Harrison and David Gordon. Fraser graduated from the Faculty of Medicine at the University of Toronto. In 1955, after almost 10 years in the Army and General Practice in Hornepayne, Sudbury and Sarnia, he and Ruth moved their young family back to Toronto where he trained in the then new field of Radiology. Upon completion of his training, in 1958, he went into partnership with Dr. Bob Bell in Galt, later Cambridge at what is now the Cambridge Memorial Hospital.
After a long and rewarding career, he retired in 1987 as the Chief of Radiology for the hospital and a partner in Radiology Associates. He worked for another 8 years, part- time.

Friendship was particularly important to Dad and he was thankful for his friendships in the Dog Lakers fishing group. He and Ruth enjoyed many years of friendship with the members and wives of that group and with others he called his friends.

We would like to thank Shirley and Doris and their staff at Fairview Mennonite Home for the great care and support they have given Mom and Dad over the past 10 months. We also want to thank Dr. Louise Sims (Cambridge), Dr. Phil Trudel (Cambridge) and Dr. Eric Hentschel (Kitchener) for their care and support during Dad's illness.
It's been said that he was a gentle and kind man who was loved and respected by all who knew him. We will think of him everyday. Thank you, Papa for your never ending love, support and pride in your family.

If desired, a donation to the Cambridge Memorial Hospital in the memory of F.C. Parrott would be gratefully received. Dad requested cremation and so that has been done and a celebration of his life is planned for a later date.
